When custom web design is the right choice
Templates are fine for many businesses — they are fast, cheap, and the design quality has improved a lot. Custom is the right choice when:
- Your brand needs to look meaningfully different from competitors
- You have specific UX flows that templates handle awkwardly
- You need control over performance and SEO that themes cannot give
- You plan to scale the site (content, products, languages) and templates would not survive the growth
- You are entering a market where buyers judge competence by the website (B2B SaaS, premium services, fintech)
If none of those apply, save the budget and use a quality template. We will tell you that honestly.
What "custom" actually means in our process
Custom web design at XPlus is not "we built a one-off in WordPress with a custom theme." It is:
- Original art direction — moodboards, type pairings, color systems made for your brand
- Bespoke design system — components, tokens, type scale, spacing scale, motion tokens, all defined for the project in Figma
- Custom illustrations or photography — when the project warrants it, we art-direct or build the asset library
- Hand-coded front-end — not a theme. Astro, Next.js or vanilla, written for the design
- Tailored CMS schema — content models built for your team's editorial workflow, not generic page-builder fields
Custom web design vs templates: when each makes sense
This is a question worth its own page. Short version:
| Aspect | Templates | Custom |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | 2-4 weeks | 6-12 weeks |
| Brand differentiation | Low | High |
| Performance ceiling | Medium | Excellent |
| SEO control | Limited | Total |
| Long-term maintenance | Tied to theme updates | Independent |
Brand-driven design system
A custom website is the public face of a design system. We build the system explicitly: type tokens, color tokens, spacing scale, radii, shadow elevations, motion curves and durations, component variants. Everything is documented in Figma and mirrored in CSS variables. Your team — and any future agency — can extend the system without breaking it.

Frequently asked about custom web design
How much does custom web design cost?
Pricing depends on scope: page count, content complexity, integrations, custom illustration vs stock, multilingual support. We give a fixed-scope quote after a 1-2 hour discovery call. Contact us with a short brief and we respond in 24-48 hours.
Can you redesign an existing custom site?
Yes. See website redesign. We can keep parts of the existing system you like and rebuild the rest.
Do you use AI to generate custom designs?
No. We use AI as a tool inside the workflow (research, asset variations, copy drafts) but every layout decision, type choice and component is made by a human designer. AI-generated layouts are easy to spot and they all look the same — which defeats the purpose of "custom."
This is one of six tracks under our web design services. If your project covers more than one — for example, you need both a redesign and an e-commerce layer — we scope it as a single engagement under the parent service.
